largely by rises in women and people in their 30s

As a health and wellness navigator and advocate, it is my responsibility to ensure that my clients prioritize their well-being. While I strive to empower them to take optimal care of themselves, I acknowledge that unforeseen circumstances can arise. Recently sports commentator Micheal Strahan and his beautiful daughter Isabella spoke out about her battle with a brain tumor at 19. When the researchers looked at cancer trends for younger adults by race, they found that early-onset cancers were going up fastest among people who identify as American Indian or Alaska Natives, Asians and Hispanics. On average, the growth rates of early-onset cancers remained stable in White people and decreased in Black people between 2010 and 2019. How common is cancer in young adults?

  • About 80,000 young adults aged 20 to 39 are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States. About 5% of all cancers are diagnosed in people in this age range.
  • About 9,000 young adults die from cancer each year.

Cancer is the 4th leading cause of death in this age group, behind only accidents, suicide, and homicide. It’s the leading cause of death from disease among females in this age group, and is second only to heart disease among males.
