Hypertension & Preeclampsia Don’t Mix.

Hypertension & Preeclampsia: Understanding the Risks and Protecting Maternal Health

In recent years, maternal health has garnered increased attention as we strive to ensure that every woman has a healthy and safe pregnancy. Among the most significant threats to maternal well-being are hypertension (high blood pressure) and preeclampsia, both of which can pose serious risks to the mother and baby if left unmanaged. At Joydrop Baby and Wellness, we are passionate about empowering women with the knowledge and support they need to navigate these challenges safely.

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure, a condition where the force of blood against the arteries remains consistently elevated. While it can affect anyone, pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to complications when hypertension develops during pregnancy.

There are two main types of hypertension during pregnancy:

  1. Chronic Hypertension: Pre-existing high blood pressure or hypertension diagnosed before 20 weeks of pregnancy.
  2. Gestational Hypertension: High blood pressure that develops after 20 weeks of pregnancy without other symptoms of preeclampsia.

If left unmanaged, hypertension can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, premature delivery, and preeclampsia.

What is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication marked by the sudden onset of high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine, usually occurring after 20 weeks. It can lead to serious complications for both the mother and the baby, including:

  • Restricted fetal growth
  • Preterm birth
  • Placental abruption (premature detachment of the placenta)
  • Organ damage (affecting kidneys, liver, or brain)

In severe cases, preeclampsia can progress to eclampsia, a life-threatening condition that causes seizures.

Risk Factors for Preeclampsia

Some women are at higher risk of developing preeclampsia. These include:

  • First-time mothers
  • Women with a history of high blood pressure or kidney disease
  • Mothers carrying multiple babies (twins or triplets)
  • Women over 35 years old
  • African American women, due to systemic healthcare disparities

As part of our commitment at Joydrop Baby and Wellness, we work to combat racial biases in maternal health and ensure that Black mothers receive the care they need to thrive.

How Hypertension and Preeclampsia Affect Maternal Health

Preeclampsia and hypertension don’t just affect pregnancy—they can also increase the risk of chronic illnesses later in life. Women with preeclampsia are more likely to develop heart disease, stroke, or high blood pressure post-pregnancy. The health of the baby can also be impacted, with some newborns facing low birth weight or complications from premature delivery.

Managing Hypertension and Preeclampsia for a Healthy Pregnancy

While hypertension and preeclampsia can be serious, there are steps you can take to reduce risks and promote a healthy pregnancy:

  1. Monitor Blood Pressure Regularly: If you’ve had high blood pressure in the past, discuss home monitoring with your healthcare provider.
  2. Stay Active: Light exercise, such as walking or prenatal yoga, can help manage blood pressure levels.
  3. Follow a Healthy Diet: Limit salt intake and focus on whole foods, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables.
  4. Attend Prenatal Appointments: Regular prenatal check-ups are essential for detecting early signs of hypertension or preeclampsia.
  5. Manage Stress: Engage in activities that promote mental wellness, such as meditation, journaling, or connecting with loved ones.
  6. Ask About Low-Dose Aspirin: In some cases, your doctor may recommend a low-dose aspirin regimen to lower the risk of preeclampsia.
